Student Employee – Literacy Program Assistant (Work-Study)

Student Employment Eligibility:

Students must be awarded Federal College Work-Study or Campus Employment to be employed with any Student Employment positions.

Campus Work-Study (CWS) provides part-time jobs for students attending Ashford University with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the recipient’s course of study.

The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work-study (FWS), and Federal Perkins Loan programs are called campus-based programs because they are administered directly by the financial aid office at each participating school.

Position Summary:

Ashford University is seeking high-achieving students interested in supporting community service efforts through literacy programs.

The Literacy Program Assistant (Work Study) is a part-time employment opportunity in the Ashford University Student Affairs department. The role will be placed in the San Diego Clairemont Mesa Boys and Girls Club, and will need to be available Monday through Friday, 3pm to 5pm. The Clairemont Mesa Boys and Girls Club is located at 4635 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92117. Administrative duties will be completed remotely.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide youth and family literacy programming to community organizations

  • Develop curriculum for youth and family literacy programming

  • Provide one on one literacy tutoring

  • Develop individualized reading plans

  • Facilitate book clubs for children and parents

  • Develop and lead English reading skills workshops for bilingual youth and families

  • Communicate reading plans and student progress with parents, guardians, and teachers

  • Other duties as assigned

Student-Employment Requirements:

  • Be eligible for Federal Work Study funding

  • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program with Ashford University

  • Must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress

  • Have access to a reliable computer, phone, and internet connection

  • Must agree to, complete, and pass a urinalysis screening for illegal drugs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desire to educate/teach youth and adult learners

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong organizational, time management, and study skills

Additional Specifics:

  • Supervisor: Carmel Malixi, Student Affairs Compliance and Quality Assurance Manager

  • Pay rate: $20.00 per hour.

  • Estimated length of the assignment: Based on eligible funding or not to exceed past the end of the 2018-2019 award year, whichever is earliest.

  • Evaluation Procedure: Student workers will be evaluated on eligibility and performance as needed.

Education:

  • Be enrolled in educational field (i.e. Early Childhood Education, English Language Learner Studies, or related field.)

Education Requirements:

If a degree or education credit minimum is required for the position, all education must be conferred by a regionally accredited or approved nationally accredited institution. All candidates must provide proof of higher education (official transcripts) upon request.
