Ashford University Manager of Accounting in San Diego, California

The Manager of Accounting position is a full-time employment opportunity. The Manager of Accounting role will have the following primary areas of focus:

  1. General ledger and Revenue/Receivables close process involvement as a preparer and reviewer, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement analytical reviews

  2. Assist in the design, implementation, and re-assessment of key controls.

  3. Assist with establishing processes for identifying new transactions (or changes to existing ones) and ensure accounting models applied are consistent with US GAAP.

  4. Perform technical accounting research and whitepaper writing related to non-recurring transactions.

  5. Coaching and mentoring of staff and senior accountants.

  6. Ad hoc projects

In order to complete the above, the Manager of Accounting will be required to proactively communicate with all other departments within the organization and within the Corporate Finance department. The Manager of Accounting will report directly to the Director of Accounting.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Being a key member of the financial close process, including account reconciliations and analytical reviews

  • Assist in the design and implementation of accounting models and subsequent re-assessment for transactions.

  • Assist in controls testing and project management, working directly with internal and external audit teams

  • Preparation of technical accounting whitepapers and related research

  • Willing to proactively take on ad hoc projects

  • Participate in system and process changes and improvements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-4 years of public accounting experience and 1-2+ years of private accounting experience;

  • Strong United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) knowledge

  • Strong controls knowledge and experience

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Access

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of financial processes and systems; adept at implementing initiatives to improve efficiency

  • Strong leadership skills, in particular, a “lead by example” mentality and a hands-on coaching style

  • Highly motivated with a strong work ethic and positive attitude; able to multi-task and consistently meet deadlines

  • Detail oriented, analytical thinker who also understands the big picture and can identify and proactively act on issues before they become problems

  • Strong ability to anticipate issues (including questions from superiors) and offer thought-out potential solutions

  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization

  • Proficiency in Great Plains, Management Reporter and/or CampusVue systems a plus.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar field.

  • CPA required.
